Gilbert N. Haugen was the last Republican to hold the office of Dean of the House before Don Young. Haugen was a member of the House of Representatives from Minnesota from 1919 to 1957. He served as Dean of the House from 1953 to 1957. Young was elected to the House of Representatives in 1973 and has served continuously since then. He became Dean of the House in 2015.
