In 1997, Donald Tusk was elected to the Polish Senate. The Senate is the upper house of the Polish parliament and is composed of 100 members elected to 4-year terms. Tusk served in the Senate until 2001 when he was elected to the Sejm, the lower house of the Polish parliament.
