Sher Ali Khan was the third Emir of Afghanistan and the founder of the Barakzai dynasty. He succeeded his brother Dost Mohammad Khan in 1842 after the First Anglo-Afghan War. He was a capable and popular ruler, but his reign was plagued by conflicts with the British Empire. He was eventually deposed by his son, Muhammad Yaqub Khan, in 1879.
