The seat of East Lothian was previously held by Kenny MacAskill, who is a member of the Scottish National Party. He had been the MP for the seat since 1997, but he stepped down in 2023. Douglas was selected to stand for Labour in East Lothian in 2023, and he won the seat in the general election that year.
