Bader joined the Royal Air Force in 1928. He was initially assigned to a training squadron before being posted to No. 23 Squadron, flying Gloster Gamecocks. Bader quickly established himself as a skilled pilot and was promoted to flight commander in 1930. He continued to serve with No. 23 Squadron until 1932, when he was posted to the Central Flying School as an instructor.
