Douglas Hofstadter studied physics at Stanford University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1975. He is a theoretical physicist and cognitive scientist, and is best known for his book Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid (1979), which won the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction in 1980.
