In 1864, the Confederate States Army launched the H. L. Hunley, a hand-cranked submarine, from Charleston Harbor. The submarine sank shortly after submerging, taking all eight crew members with it. In 1995, Owsley led a team of archaeologists who excavated the submarine and studied its remains.
