Dzhokhar Dudayev was assassinated by Russian forces in April 1996. He was the first president of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, a self-declared republic in the North Caucasus region of Russia. Dudayev was a staunch nationalist who led the Chechen resistance to Russian rule. He was killed in a missile strike on his headquarters in Grozny, the capital of Chechnya.
