Ed Markey entered politics after his service in the Army Reserves. He served in the Reserves from 1969 to 1973, and then went on to work as a lawyer. He first ran for office in 1976, and won a seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He served in the House until 1985, when he was elected to the United States Senate.
