Answer
Edgar Allan Poe emigrated from England, where he was born in London in 1809. His parents were English actors who died when he was young, and he was raised by John and Frances Allan, a wealthy Richmond, Virginia couple who gave him their surname. Although he considered himself American and is widely regarded as one of the country's greatest writers, he never officially became a U.S. citizen.
