Before making it to the major leagues, Renteria played for the Colombia national baseball team. He was born in Cartagena, Colombia, and began playing baseball at a young age. He played for the Colombia national team in the 2006 World Baseball Classic, and he was also a member of the team that won the 2015 Pan American Games.
