Edith Cavell was a nurse who was executed by the German army during World War I for helping Allied soldiers escape from occupied Belgium. She was born in Brussels in 1865 and became a nurse in 1890. During World War I, she worked in a hospital in Brussels that treated both Allied and German soldiers. She helped many Allied soldiers escape from the hospital and return to their own lines.
