Contrary to popular belief, Edmonia Lewis was not entirely self-taught. While she did not receive formal training in a traditional art academy, she had several notable mentors who guided her artistic development. Notably, she studied under the renowned sculptor Edward Brackett in Boston and later received instruction and support from the abolitionist community, including William Lloyd Garrison and Harriet Hosmer.
