Leonard Bernstein was a German-born American composer, conductor, pianist, author, music lecturer and television personality. He was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, but his parents were both German-Jewish immigrants. Bernstein studied at Harvard University and the Curtis Institute of Music, and he made his conducting debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in 1943.
