The Anglo-Japanese Alliance of 1902 was renewed in 1911 by British Foreign Secretary Edward Grey and Japanese Ambassador Count Tadasu Hayashi. The renewed alliance was a defensive pact aimed at maintaining the status quo in the Far East and countering the growing power of Germany. It remained in effect until 1922 when it was replaced by the Washington Naval Treaty.
