Thomas C. Platt succeeded Edward Murphy Jr. as U.S. Senator from New York. Platt was a prominent Republican politician who had served as the state's Assembly Speaker and Senate President. He was elected to the Senate in 1897 after Murphy resigned to become the Ambassador to Germany. Platt served in the Senate until 1909, when he resigned to become the President of the United States Express Company.
