Edward Seymour, the 1st Duke of Somerset was the brother-in-law of Henry VIII and one of the most powerful men in England in the 1540s. He was a strong supporter of the Protestant Reformation and was instrumental in the execution of Thomas More and other Catholic leaders. He also played a key role in the accession of Edward VI to the throne.
