Edward Teller was an early member of the Manhattan Project, the U.S. government's effort to develop the atomic bomb during World War II. He was one of the scientists who designed the first nuclear weapon, which was tested in New Mexico in July 1945. Teller later became a leading advocate for the development of thermonuclear weapons, or hydrogen bombs.
