Edward the Elder was the son of Alfred the Great, who ruled Wessex. After Alfred's death, Edward became king of Wessex and began to expand his kingdom. He conquered Mercia in 917 and East Anglia in 921, and by 927 he had united all of England south of the River Humber under his rule.
