Edward the Elder succeeded his father Alfred the Great as King of the Anglo-Saxons in 899. He reigned until his death in 924, and during his reign he expanded the kingdom of Wessex and consolidated its power. He also led a number of military campaigns against the Vikings, and was largely successful in pushing them back.
