Appleton served in the British Army during World War I. He enlisted in September 1914, shortly after the outbreak of war, and served with the Royal Engineers. He saw action on the Western Front and was awarded the Military Cross for bravery in 1917. He remained in the army after the war and retired with the rank of captain in 1927.
