Edwin McMillan and Glenn Seaborg shared the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their discovery of the transuranium elements. They were both physicists at the University of California, Berkeley, and they worked together on the Manhattan Project during World War II. In 1940, they discovered plutonium, the first transuranium element. They then went on to discover neptunium and americium. Their work was instrumental in the development of nuclear weapons.
