General Óscar Mejía Victores succeeded Efraín Ríos Montt as President of Guatemala in 1982. He was a military officer who had served as Minister of Defense under Ríos Montt. Mejía Victores continued Ríos Montt's policies of repression against the Guatemalan leftist guerrillas, and he oversaw the Guatemalan Civil War. He stepped down in 1986 and was succeeded by Vinicio Cerezo.
