Answer
Perestroika, which means "restructuring" in Russian, was a policy of economic and political reform introduced by Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in 1987. It sought to decentralize the Soviet economy and introduce limited market mechanisms. Egon Krenz, who briefly succeeded Erich Honecker as leader of East Germany in 1989, failed to implement similar reforms, which contributed to the growing discontent and eventual collapse of the communist regime in East Germany.
