How did Elagabalus become the Roman emperor?

  • Through inheritance

  • By force

  • Elected by the Senate

  • Raised by an army revolt

Answer

Elagabalus became Roman emperor after an army revolt. He was the great-nephew of the previous emperor, Severus Alexander, and had been brought up as a priest of the Syrian god Elagabalus. When Severus Alexander was killed in battle in 222, the army proclaimed Elagabalus emperor. He was only 14 years old at the time, and his reign was marked by scandal and excess.
