In 1935, Eleftherios Venizelos came out of retirement to support a military coup. The coup was led by General Georgios Kondylis, who overthrew the government of Panagis Tsaldaris. Venizelos believed that Kondylis was the only person who could save Greece from civil war. However, the coup did not lead to stability and Kondylis was eventually overthrown by General Ioannis Metaxas.
