Elena Kagan is the only current justice who was not elevated from the US courts of appeals. She was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Barack Obama in 2010, after serving as solicitor general of the United States from 2009 to 2010. Prior to that, she was a law professor at the University of Chicago Law School from 1993 to 2009.
