Elie Hobeika was assassinated on January 24, 2002, when he was driving his car in Beirut, Lebanon. He was the leader of the Lebanese Forces militia and had been accused of war crimes during the Lebanese Civil War. The assassination was blamed on Hezbollah, a Shia Islamist group that was fighting against the Lebanese Forces.
