Elijah Muhammad was born Elijah Poole in 1897 in Georgia. He became a follower of W.D. Fard, who preached a message of black empowerment and self-reliance. After Fard's disappearance in 1934, Muhammad became the leader of the Nation of Islam, a religious and political movement that promoted black nationalism. Muhammad died in 1975.
