Elijah Muhammad was succeeded as the head of the Nation of Islam by his son, Wallace Muhammad. Wallace Muhammad was a more moderate leader than his father and sought to bring the NOI closer to mainstream Islam. He made several changes to the NOI's teachings, including removing the requirement that members practice the black separatist ideology that Elijah Muhammad had espoused.
