In 1809, Elizabeth Seton established the first Catholic girls' school in the U.S. in Emmitsburg, Maryland. She had been raised in the Episcopalian Church but converted to Catholicism after her husband died. She founded the Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph in 1813, and the order opened schools throughout the country.
