Emilia Plater participated in the November Uprising of 1830-1831, which was a major Polish insurrection against the Russian Empire. The uprising was sparked by the outbreak of the November Revolution in France in 1830, and was led by the Polish nobility. Plater served as a cavalry officer in the uprising, and fought in several battles. She was eventually captured by the Russians and died in captivity in 1831.
