Emilia Plater was a Polish noblewoman who fought as a captain in the November Uprising against the Russian Empire in 1830–1831. She was one of the first women to lead troops in combat in modern history. Plater was born into a wealthy aristocratic family in Lithuania. She was educated at home and received military training from her father. In 1830, she joined the November Uprising against the Russian Empire.
