Émilie du Châtelet was born in 1706 in Paris, France. She was a mathematician, physicist, and philosopher who made important contributions to the fields of calculus, optics, and mechanics. She is best known for her work on the calculus of variations, which she developed independently of Leonhard Euler. She also wrote a commentary on Isaac Newton's Principia Mathematica, which was published posthumously in 1759.
