Emmeline Pankhurst tried to join the Independent Labour Party through her friend Keir Hardie. However, the party was only for men at the time and did not accept women. This angered Emmeline and led her to start her own organization, the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU). The WSPU fought for women's suffrage and used militant tactics such as hunger strikes and arson to achieve their goals.
