Emmerson Mnangagwa came to power as president of Zimbabwe in 2017 after a coup d'état backed by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces. The coup removed Robert Mugabe, who had been president since 1980. Mnangagwa was a close ally of Mugabe for many years, but he fell out with him in 2016 and was fired from his post as vice president.
