Li Yuan was born in 566 in a small village in what is now Shanxi Province. He was the son of a minor nobleman, and he received a good education. When he was young, he became a follower of the Buddhist monk Xuanzang. In 618, Li Yuan led a rebellion against the Sui dynasty and established the Tang dynasty.
