In 617, Li Shimin, a son of the Sui general Li Yuan, urged his father to rebel against the Sui dynasty. Li Yuan was initially reluctant to rebel, but Li Shimin convinced him that the Sui dynasty was weak and that the time was right to overthrow it. Li Yuan agreed to rebel and was soon able to overthrow the Sui dynasty and establish the Tang dynasty.
