What year did Commodore Perry make contact with Japan?

  • 1850

  • 1853

  • 1860

  • 1863

Answer

In 1853 Commodore Matthew Perry led a small fleet of American warships into the harbor of Edo (now Tokyo) to demand that Japan open its ports to trade with the United States. Perry’s mission was a success, and in 1854 Japan signed the Treaty of Kanagawa, which opened two ports to American trade and allowed the United States to establish a consulate in Japan.
