The United States forced Japan to open its borders during Emperor Kōmei's reign. In 1853, Commodore Matthew Perry led a fleet of warships to Edo (Tokyo) and demanded that Japan open its ports to trade with the United States. The Japanese government was reluctant to comply, but eventually agreed to sign the Treaty of Kanagawa in 1854.
