Who threatened Japan with military force to re-open its gates to trade?

  • Commodore Perry

  • Lord Macartney

  • Captain Cook

  • Admiral Nelson

Answer

Commodore Perry was an American naval officer who was sent to Japan in 1853 to force the country to open its ports to trade. He did so by sailing a fleet of ships into Tokyo Bay and threatening to attack if the Japanese did not comply. The Japanese were forced to agree to Perry's demands, and Japan was opened to trade with the West.
