Puliuru Jian (541-604) was the Xianbei name of Emperor Wen of Sui. He was the son of Yang Jian, a powerful general who had served under the Northern Zhou dynasty and had helped to overthrow it. In 581, Yang Jian proclaimed himself emperor and founded the Sui dynasty. He ruled for 24 years, during which time he oversaw the reunification of China and the construction of the Grand Canal.
