Stephen of Blois, Duke of Normandy, took the throne after the death of Henry I. Stephen was Henry's nephew and was chosen by the English nobles to be king. He was opposed by Matilda, Henry's daughter, who claimed the throne as her right. The two sides fought for control of England in the Anarchy, a period of civil war that lasted from 1135 to 1153.
