Leo Varadkar succeeded Enda Kenny as leader of Fine Gael in 2017. Varadkar had previously served as Minister for Health and Minister for Social Protection. He was elected leader of Fine Gael by the party's parliamentary party and was subsequently elected Taoiseach by the Dáil Éireann. Varadkar is the first openly gay Taoiseach and the first person of Indian descent to hold the office.
