In 1970, Willy Hartmann was forced to retire from professional cycling after a dramatic accident during the Tour de France. It occurred during the eighth stage of the competition, as he was descending the Col de Menté, when a car driven by a spectator inadvertently crossed into the path of the cyclists, causing a massive pileup. Hartmann, unfortunately, suffered severe injuries, ultimately ending his illustrious cycling career.
