Answer
Ernest Lawrence obtained his PhD in physics from Yale University in 1921. He was a student of Robert A. Millikan, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1923 for his work on the photoelectric effect. Lawrence went on to become a leading physicist in his own right, and he is best known for his invention of the cyclotron, a particle accelerator that he developed in the early 1930s.
