Answer
Ernst Cassirer was greatly influenced by Immanuel Kant. Kant's philosophy of transcendental idealism was the basis for Cassirer's own philosophy of symbolic forms, which he developed in his major work, The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms. Cassirer argued that human beings are fundamentally symbolic creatures, and that our understanding of the world is mediated through symbols.
