The Welträtsel, or "world riddle," is a term used by Ernst Haeckel to describe the big questions of science and philosophy. Haeckel believed that these questions were ultimately unanswerable, but that they were still worth exploring. He saw the Welträtsel as a way to encourage people to think about the bigger picture of life and the universe.
