Ethan Carter III, known professionally as EC3, signed a contract with WWE in 2009. He was assigned to the developmental territory Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW), where he competed under the ring name Derrick Bateman. Bateman won the FCW Florida Heavyweight Championship and the FCW 15 Championship on two occasions each. He was also the winner of the 2011 FCW Grand Slam Tournament.
