Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 was discovered in 1993 and was found to be on a collision course with Jupiter. The comet broke up into pieces and the fragments hit Jupiter in July 1994. The impact created huge fireballs and clouds of gas that were visible from Earth. The impact also caused changes in the atmosphere of Jupiter.
